Butterflies on the Rise

The purple-flowered butterfly bush is blooming nicely and butterflies, hummingbird moths and hummingbirds are flocking to it.  I have seen many monarch butterflies lately so the latest hatching cycle is good.  I planted a “Golden Glow” butterfly bush this year which has pale yellow flowers on it now and this bush should grow much larger next year because it will be more established.

Many of the monarch butterflies are attracted to the sunflowers and zinnias I planted in the vegetable garden and every time I walk up there I see at least one flitting around.  Other species are noticable as well.  The trumpet creeper has lots of blooms and of course the hummingbirds will fight fiercely to obtain dominance over those choice flowers.  Yum!

Hi Gail, thanks for your link! So many wonderful, little dramas take place in and around the garden. I’d say gardening or just observing one’s garden is great stress relief. Have you seen those hanging planters for tomatoes in which the plant hangs upside down out of the bottom of the pot? Do you have any experience with them?
