My Intuition Caught a Bear

I just had a fairly close encounter with a bear at about 9 PM.  My intuition told me there was a bear outside and my intuition did not fail me.  I had a thought to go out on the porch and close the gate in case a bear decided to come up on the porch to grab the hummingbird feeder hanging from the gutter and there he was, walking across the lawn near the porch.

I thought he was headed for the compost pit up in the back of the garden but he circled around the garage and came back.  He was only about 10 feet away when he appeared again.  I tried to shoo him off and though he hesitated, he decided I was not worth worrying about and walked to the front of the porch where there is a small, open sunflower seed feeder hanging from a pole.

At that point I came inside and watched from the door as he took down the pole and feeder.  After polishing off that tiny snack, he must have headed across the street to our neighbor’s yard because I found out later there were three in their yard.

I have considered the possibility that the second time I saw the bear that night it was not the same one.

Potential Melt Downs

How many people out there are really struggling with their emotional and mental states?  How many people feel they are often on the brink of a total melt down?  How many people feel they are going to lose it because they feel so much stress and pressure and are unable to cope with the demands they face?  How many people feel they are at the limit of what they can bear?  How many people spend a lot of time fantasizing about escape?

Yellow Petunias!

I bought the most fabulous, fabulous petunias!  They are called “Lemon Zest” by Viva! and are a beautiful, lemony yellow, golden yellow in the center, with a luscious, lemony scent.  They are absolutely gorgeous!  I have a huge pot to plant them in and the container they came in, which resembles an ice cream container, says they will grow into a three foot mound.  They are even patented!  I am waiting for the new moon to put them in the bigger pot.

I may have to buy another container of them.  I bought them at Home Depot a few days ago.  They are very special flowers and I just love looking at them.

Dementia on the Rise

I saw an article in a local paper today which described the Silver Alert (based upon the Amber Alert) being adopted in the States for elders who wander off.  According to this article, with baby boomers aging, the numbers of people being diagnosed with dementia is skyrocketing.  Eek!

The Lure of a Female

When I went to check the rain gauge yesterday I came upon a bizarre scene.  The bottom of the rain gauge was filled with a pile of small, dead, black-colored beetles, perhaps 30 or 40 in all.  The rain gauge was bone dry though I thought there might have been a tenth of an inch in it from earlier, light showers.  For some reason they all crawled in there and expired.

I took the gauge in the house to show my buddy.  He was as puzzled as I was until he said, “I’ll bet there’s a female in there!”  Well, sure enough, as he shook the beetles around he saw there was only one brown beetle and that must have been the female.  All of the males crawled in there hoping to mate with her!  She would have been emitting a breeding pheromone.  Little did they know they were entering their own tomb.
