Unusual Tornado Warning

We had tornado warnings for my county earlier this evening which is highly and most unusual for my area.  A small batch of strong thunderstorms was headed directly my way from the northwest and I watched them coming in on the weather radar.  I got busy doing my storm thing!  The storms were not bad at all when they passed over though my internet connection was knocked out for a few moments so I had to reset and reboot the system.  No biggie!

Three tenths of an inch of rain fell which is fine with me since it’s better than no rain at all.  I was telling my buddy this afternoon we would have to do a rain dance because it’s been so dry.  We had some rain afterall so someone must have been listening.  :-)   I don’t care how much one waters, those plants respond better to that polluted rain.

6-1-07  Note:  Someone was talking about the storm last night and at her place in town the wind bent over trees and the rain was a blinding deluge.  Hmm.  The storm was mild here, two miles away at most as the crow flies.

Gray Whale Not So Lucky

A young, 41-foot female gray whale washed ashore at Seal Rock, OR a few days ago.  The whale has a large cyst and various body samples were taken to determine the cause of death, if possible.  Someone unauthorized took parts from the whale which is a federal crime and they are looking for the person responsible.

Adopt a Whale

I “adopted” a humpback whale a few days ago.  :-D   It’s a female who has birthed many calves and she lives off of the New England coast.  The Sacramento whales, Delta and Dawn, inspired me to do so.  I’ll bet many people felt inspired by the famous mother and calf’s journey in various ways.

Downy Woodpeckers Change Color

We have Downy Woodpecker pairs coming to the feeders and nesting nearby.  There is one particular male who comes often and all of the white feathers on his body are stained a deep yellow.  I think this is from pollen.  I wondered if it could be from sap but the feathers don’t look sticky.  I cannot think of what else it could be but pollen.

The same thing occurred last year with a pair of these woodpeckers.  Later on in the season, none of the Downy’s had the yellow feathers so I assumed the staining eventually washed off via bathing and rain and/or perhaps the late summer molt replaced the stained feathers.  I don’t think I have ever seen this before last year and I have seen many a Downy in my lifetime.

Long Live Delta and Dawn!

I hope they make it out into the ocean and continue their journey.  I hope the Sacramento Whales live long lives.  I hope their wounds heal and Delta goes on to birth many more calves.  I hope they stay away from sonar and boat propellers.

I hope they are spotted out in the ocean today and are occasionally sighted in future weeks, months and years in a state of vigorous health.

As of 11 AM PST there was no sign of them yet.  Many are on the lookout for them including commercial vessel operators and people in helicopters.

Sacramento Whales Renew Hope

I have to say the antibiotics given to Delta and Dawn appear to have helped to make a difference, at least for the time being.  Antibiotics can be very useful in life or death situations.  If they make it back to the ocean and continue to live on in health, I will be amazed.  So much energy has been directed their way it would be extremely disappointing if they perish.

Sacramento Whales Like Sundays

I think I know why the whales have moved south on two consecutive Sunday afternoons at approximately the same time.  I think they had some help from a certain group of unseen helpers who regularly meet on Sunday afternoons.

Not only that but it seems some sort of technology may not be running on Sunday afternoons which has interfered with the whales natural sonar.  I wish I could prove it.

Delta and Dawn are not out of the woods yet — they have dangers to navigate downriver — so we shall see what ultimately happens with this pair of majestic creatures.

At the time of being spotted Monday morning they had moved approximately 24 miles south in 24 hours.  They were about half way back to the ocean at that time.

Sacramento Whales Are Moving

The whales began moving south about 2 PM PST and passed under the Rio Vista Bridge while it was down to let traffic across.  As of 5:15 PM they were about 8 miles south of the bridge.

Red Fox Symbology

It is natural for me to look beyond the surface of things so when the red foxes began appearing in the yard which I wrote about thrice earlier I immediately sought the deeper meaning.  Foxes are known to be cunning and sly and they also commonly steal from humans as in “there is a fox in the henhouse.”  Also, red is the color of anger.  Warning noted and understood.

I think someone may want to steal from us and I think I know who it is.  Time will tell.

Sacramento Whales – Is Time Running Out?

I’d say the mood is somber concerning Delta and Dawn.  The marine biologists are benefiting because they have been doing tests on the whales and administering antibiotic drugs which gives them experience with wild whales.  Delta and Dawn are not so wild anymore and their future doesn’t seem too promising at this point.  They have lesions on their skin which the biologists want to identify.

Bayer and Pfizer are getting press because they donated the drugs and a pharmacy with the cute name of Grandpa’s Compounding Pharmacy mixed the dosages.

I did not know pipe-banging to herd whales is a 700+ year old Japanese tradition.

9 PM:  There are those who want to broadcast underwater sounds to the whales on their own and they are being warned if they interfere there will be severe federal penalties.
